Systems Engineer

PURPOSE: To optimize the integration and performance of vehicle systems, including engine, electronics, and aerodynamics, through data analysis, simulation, and strategic adjustments to enhance overall car performance and competitiveness.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Car wiring systems 

  • Responsible for sensors and wiring cars at shop before all tests and events.
  • Maintenance of car wiring, sensors and spares between events.
  • Maintain spares inventory of all sensors, wiring, connectors, and other hardware.

Data Logging/Sensors

  • Support development, testing, and calibration of all race car mounted sensors.
  • Install and maintain other sensor systems (shock dynos, fuel tanks, etc.) as required.
  • Troubleshoot data logging system faults.
  • Provide direction for improvement of data logging system.
  • Source new componentry for data logging system.
  • Effect repairs to data logging system and sensors when required.
  • Ensure correct calibration of all data logging sensors and events.
  • Keep accurate records of data logging system effectiveness and efficiency at all events.
  • Maintain accurate and current database of data logged information on RLL and Race Team servers.
  • Maintain mileage of all electronic components.
  • Prepare Pi setups for cars with input from Assistant Engineers and send to cars.
  • Review sensor functionality for proper setup conditions. Revise as appropriate throughout the weekend. Monitor systems during all on track activity.
  • Review sensors and looms between sessions to ensure functionality.
  • Identify sensor maintenance required with input from mechanics (i.e., new wheel speed sensor due to cut wire). Perform this sensor maintenance and provide parts and information on the Pi build for the next event.

Telemetry

  • Troubleshoot telemetry system faults.
  • Provide direction for improvement of telemetry system.
  • Source new componentry for telemetry system.
  • Effect repairs to telemetry system when required.
  • Keep accurate records of telemetry system effectiveness and efficiency at all events.
  • Setup telemetry system at all races and tests.

Radios

  • Responsible for car radio systems at shop before all tests and races.
  • Troubleshoot team car/team radio problems.
  • Design/implement solutions to radio problems.
  • Provide programming of radios for overseas/foreign races.
  • Maintain battery charging, all radios collected and on rack following sessions.
  • Track usage of, and maintain supply of radios.
  • Maintain radios and helmet microphone installations for drivers and crew.

Timing Stand/ IT 

  • Assembly and disassembly of timing stand at track.
  • Wire timing stand to pit wall and be the primary person to troubleshoot problems with the feed.
  • Ensure all hardware and networks are operating correctly before every session.
  • Maintain timing stand based upon problems encountered.
  • Collect and maintain database of race TV video from Indycar for team use and for driver weekend preparation.
  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for the timing stand and network equipment. If more assistance is required, schedule work with outside suppliers.

General 

  • Design, from concept to detail drawing, components necessary for data logging system.
  • Track designs through manufacture and ensure accuracy of finished components.
  • Support the job cost system by keeping track of all projects and logging times on jobs accurately 
  • Maintain “safety first” priority on all projects and reporting any injuries or unsafe conditions to management 
  • Daily clean-up of own area and engineering area including a weekly deep cleaning.
  • Submit purchase requisitions with proper approval for all parts, supplies, and equipment needs
  • Fulfill any other responsibilities that are related to the job

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the current IndyCar rules and regulations.

Race Travel 

This position is part of the RLL traveling team. You are required to travel to all IndyCar events. 

  • You will be notified of the travel time by RLL.
  • You will be assigned a means of transportation by RLL.
  • In the event you must attend a special function test or race you will be notified as soon as possible by RLL.
  • Be prepared to leave on short notice.

Engineering Department Operating Procedures

  • You are required to adhere to all engineering department operating procedures, as laid out by your supervisor(s), always.
  • You are required to report any problems or disputes to your supervisor(s).
  • You must report on your job(s) status to your supervisor(s) when needed.
