Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.

By participating in prestigious series such as NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, and WEC, we not only showcase technological prowess but also leverage the competitive environment to push the boundaries of automotive engineering.  Our focus on key areas such as aerodynamics, tire performance, and vehicle dynamics, among others, is crucial for maintaining an edge in the fast-paced world of racing.  The role of the Motorsports Control Systems Manager is pivotal in coordinating the interactions of these various disciplines through the design, testing, and implementation of cutting-edge controls techniques and strategies.  Moreover, this role will promote synergies between motorsports and production to drive the transfer of learned innovations into GM’s consumer vehicles, thereby enhancing the driving experience for customers worldwide.

What You’ll Do

  • Be a member of the GM Motorsports Vehicle Systems Engineering and Testing team, a group of engineers that concentrates on improving performance of the physical systems that we use in motorsports competition

  • Be an ideal team player bringing positive energy to the teamwork process and engaging with other team members in constructive and respectful ways

  • Lead a group of engineers who design control algorithms and systems to improve the performance of our racing cars

  • Contribute to cross-functional efforts with all technical groups within GM Motorsports including aerodynamics, tire performance, design and manufacturing, vehicle dynamics and simulation, vehicle performance systems, performance engineering, software engineering, and propulsion

  • Develop opportunities for collaboration on controls projects with GM Production teams and facilitate technology transfer

  • Work with simulation, Hardware-In-the-Loop and Driver-In-the-Loop simulators to improve, test, and validate control systems performance strategies

  • Build excellent working relationships with our partner race teams

  • Lead efforts to mentor and grow less experienced engineers on your team

  • Conduct periodic performance reviews of your team including mid-year and annual reviews that align with GM's corporate policies

Additional Job Description

What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in professional motorsports competition at the level of NASCAR Cup, IndyCar, WEC, IMSA, or F1

  • A strong team player who excels at working collaboratively and cross-functionally with other team members

  • Leadership experience in a motorsports engineering organization

  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR, IndyCar, WEC, or IMSA racing cars

  • Controls system design and integration in racing vehicles in a professional competition setting

  • Model-based system design in MATLAB/Simulink

  • Experience with vehicle data acquisition systems

  • HiL bench and DiL simulator testing

  • Successful candidate is an authority in controls systems

  • Highly analytical, client-oriented, and structured with strong relationship and communications skills
