Job Description

Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.

The Role

General Motors competes globally in various motorsports series including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, and WEC. We support multiple race teams with technology and guidance to enhance their competitiveness at the highest levels of motorsport. A significant part of this effort includes engineering research and development in the subject matter areas critical to racing performance spanning the disciplines of aerodynamics, tire performance, vehicle dynamics and simulation, design and manufacturing, performance engineering, race strategy, vehicle systems performance, and software engineering. As part of our purpose, we also collaboratively drive technological innovations from motorsports to GM's production efforts.

The role of a Motorsports Integrated Projects Performance Engineer is crucial in the fast-paced world of motorsports. Tasked with the responsibility of working alongside a dedicated team of engineers, their goal is to swiftly and efficiently resolve any technical issues that may emerge. This proactive approach not only involves troubleshooting but also enhancing the virtual tools, methodologies, and physical systems integral to the sport. The aim is to arm partner race teams with the most advanced and reliable equipment, ensuring they have a competitive edge in the high-stakes arena of motorsports racing. This specialized team is the backbone that supports the relentless pursuit of excellence and performance in the thrilling domain of professional racing.

What You’ll Do

  • Be a member of the GM Motorsports Integrated Projects team, a group of engineers that concentrates on improving performance of the physical systems, technical processes, and virtual tools that we use in motorsports competition

  • Be an ideal team player bringing positive energy to the teamwork process and engaging with other team members in constructive and respectful ways

  • As part of a team effort, address performance concerns in our racing series including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, WEC, and various other series

  • Contribute to collaborative efforts with all technical groups within GM Motorsports including aerodynamics, tire performance, design and manufacturing, vehicle dynamics and simulation, vehicle performance systems, performance engineering, and software engineering

  • Interface with our vehicle performance systems group for support with component and vehicle testing requirements

  • Leverage the resources available within the GM Motorsports organization to solve the latest technical problems associated with motorsports competition

  • Interrogate problem symptoms, diagnose root cause, and build plan of attack to solve these problems through a combined use of engineering analysis, simulation, Driver-in-Loop simulators, and physical testing and validation

  • Collect and analyze data to rapidly and accurately troubleshoot technical problem areas that emerge as we enhance the competitiveness of our partner race teams

  • Change focus quickly from one project to another as problems are solved and priorities shift throughout the course of the racing calendar each year

  • Have the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and simultaneously attack multiple problems

  • Develop excellent working relationships with our partner race teams

  • Engage in efforts to transfer technology between GM Motorsports and GM Production programs where possible

Additional Job Description

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject; or equivalent motorsports industry experience

  • 10+ years of engineering experience in professional motorsports competition at the level of NASCAR Cup, IndyCar, WEC, IMSA, or F1

  • A strong team player who excels at working collaboratively and cross-functionally with other team members

  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR, IndyCar, WEC, or IMSA racing cars

  • Experience with building and executing performance simulations of race vehicles in a competition setting

  • Experience with database organization of race vehicle systems and components

  • Experience with vehicle data acquisition systems

  • Successful candidate is an authority in vehicle testing and competition

  • Highly analytical, client-oriented, and structured with strong relationship and communications skills

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, bringing a strong work ethic and integrity
