Lead Data Quality Engineer

Lead Data Quality EngineerBrackley, UK

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.

Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.

Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.

About the Role:

Formula One is a knowledge competition in which fine margins can make the difference between success or failure. We operate in an environment where time with the race car on-track is very precious and hence trustworthy, reliable, and usable data are key enablers in learning and adding performance at a greater rate than our competitors.

We are looking for a driven and talented engineer to lead our Data Quality group, working across the technical team to develop a mindset where data is highly valued and to deliver improvements in priority race car measurements.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Empowered by the Head of R&D Engineering, you will be responsible for driving forward our ability to accurately measure, process, analyse and report data from the car.  This will require liaising with several key stakeholders to achieve simultaneous progress in each area of the chain.

  • Responsibility for prioritising programmes related to data quality and agreeing and reporting timelines with each key stakeholder.

  • To develop a culture within the company for properly valuing data, understanding that the learning from this data drives both performance and reliability (Rubbish in = rubbish out).  Data quality should become a key feature in design and not a later add-on and there should be an incremental drive to improve our ability to better measure and analyse the car.

  • To oversee development of automated means to highlight inconsistencies in the data, and to the output from our simulations, such that this can be used to create ‘Data faults’.

  • To improve sensor/experiment ‘up time’, with the long-term aim that every experiment we do gathers reliable and accurate data first time.

  • To manage the resolution of data faults within the team’s feedback system.

  • To work with other team experts on measurement technology, such that you can advise on new and upgraded capabilities (e.g. Dynos, DILs, Wind tunnel, R&D, etc).

  • To train and advise the designers on good practice when designing with data and learning in mind.

  • To investigate and evaluate new technologies which could be used to improve our measurements, including liaising with the advanced measurement group at HPP.

  • To manage and develop the member(s) of your team.

  • To build relationships within the wider organisation, such that the above can be achieved.  This will involve educating the leaders about their responsibilities in data quality and leveraging the huge resources they manage to make progress in this important area.

Candidate Profile:

Essential

  • Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics.

  • Skilled in data analysis.

  • Experience with modern programming languages and Matlab.

  • Hands-on engineer with a good grounding in the basic principles of Physics and Engineering.

  • Self-motivated and able to take initiative.

  • Demonstrable ability to work in a pressurised environment.

  • Good personal communication skills with people at all levels

  • Tenacious, curious, and creative

Desirable

  • PhD in an Engineering discipline, Mathematics or Physics

  • Knowledge of Electronics.

  • Board experience of experimental measurements.

  • Experience in the use of Machine Learning and Computer Vision.

  • Knowledge of a range of sensing and measurement technologies.
