Purpose of the Role:

You will be part of a team of skilled Manufacturing Engineers, rotating between the design office and the machine shop, delivering high quality end to end solutions at pace, driving performance on track throughout the season. During the build season you will be responsible for making upstream DFM decisions and driving governance to support best practice within the design function. Within the machine shop you will be responsible for delivering manufacturing-based projects, including CNC programmes, playing your part in the demanding task of building a new race car. You will use your skills and experience in manufacturing engineering to support RFTIF, providing total engineering solutions that support our vision of world class manufacture for car components, wind tunnel components, pit equipment and parts for our heritage cars. Role Dimensions:

Reporting to the Team Leader(s), it is your responsibility to deliver DFM solutions, stage models and drawings, routings, jig, and fixture designs, determine raw material requirements, optimise tooling selection, generate directed inspection reports, and create CNC programmes with set up sheets on time whilst working to best practice and embracing continuous improvement to meet the overarching strategic vision for the department. The role demands a skilled, diligent, and agile person that works well as part of the team and is target driven.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Incorporate best practice in terms of programming quality, work holding, cutter choice, process optimisation and standardisation in all that we do
  • Proactively embed design for manufacture as far upstream as practical within the design process, supporting scheming, concept, and design reviews
  • Support material selection, material forecasting and early procurement opportunities
  • Determine the requirement for stage models and drawings to enhance manufacturability and process reliability
  • Design and detail robust tooling and fixturing to ensure right first time and maximise lights out machining capability and capacity
  • Determine the requirement for bespoke cutters, tooling, fixtures, and gauging. Initiating the procurement process where appropriate
  • Determine manufacturing routings and methods to assist planning and budget management
  • Advise and determine were appropriate directed inspection to support right first time, in full manufacture
  • Create CNC programmes for use in our machine shop to ensure our right first-time targets are achievable in a cost controlled and efficient manner
  • Promote the one-team approach by encouraging team members to identify and implement continuous improvement processes to minimise waste, reduce costs and deliver meaningful sustainability in everything that we do
  • Undertake projects that deliver performance for the machining function and wider team
  • Participate in frequent and proactive engagement with our Process Engineers, our Machinists, and others to ease manufacture and support continuous improvement without compromising car performance
  • Design, test and evaluate processes and SOP’s that support our workload and provide end to end security at pace
  • Work with our team members to resolve Non-Conformance Reports (NCR’s) and quality concerns with robust corrective action

Job requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Preferably educated to NVQ level 4 or 5 or equivalent - HNC / HND
  • Experienced Manufacturing Engineer, with an excellent overview of design for manufacture, cost control, production routings and directed inspection
  • Experience of offline programming, setting, and operating 3, 4 and 5 axis multi-tasking machining centres
  • Experience of using CAD / CAM systems relevant to manufacturing engineering & machining
  • Knowledge of tool management systems
  • Experience of database management would be advantageous
  • Experience with managing the delivery of work packets to enable the seamless manufacture of complex components to extremely demanding deadlines often with conflicting priorities
  • Has facilitated and supported effective change management
  • Has positively contributed to a team-oriented environment
  • Has led and participated in project closure with high value feedback to all stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide effective feedback
  • Knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office products and MRP systems
  • Experience of leading quality concern resolution with tools such as 8D, 5why, fishbone diagrams and other appropriate quality tools

McLaren Racing is based at the iconic McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) near Woking.
