Engineering Group Manager Motorsports Vehicle Systems Engineering and Testing

Job Description

Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.

The Role

General Motors competes globally in various motorsports series including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, and WEC. We support multiple race teams with technology and guidance to enhance their competitiveness at the highest levels of motorsport. A significant part of this effort includes engineering research and development in the subject matter critical to racing performance spanning the disciplines of aerodynamics, tire performance, vehicle dynamics and simulation, design and manufacturing, performance engineering, race strategy, vehicle systems performance, and software engineering. As part of our purpose, we also collaboratively drive technological innovations from motorsports to GM's production efforts.

The Engineering Group Manager for Motorsports Vehicle Systems Engineering and Testing will lead laboratory and racetrack testing of complete race cars and their subsystems for any of the racing series in which we compete. Of particular focus is WFT and tire testing in NASCAR along with electrical and controls systems development.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the GM Motorsports Vehicle Systems Engineering and Testing group, a multi-disciplinary team of engineers that focuses on physical testing and development of race cars, their subsystems, and control efforts

  • Be an ideal team player bringing positive energy to the teamwork process and engaging with other team members in constructive and respectful ways

  • Oversee testing and development of racing cars and components used by GM sponsored race teams across the global spectrum of racing series in which GM Motorsports competes, including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, WEC, and various other series

  • Lead the GM effort in NASCAR Wheel Force Transducer and other track tests

  • Coordinate efforts to collect and analyze data to enhance competitiveness of GM affiliated race teams in their respective racing series

  • Foster collaborative efforts with all technical groups within GM Motorsports including aerodynamics, tire performance, design and manufacturing, vehicle dynamics and simulation, performance engineering, and software engineering

  • Ensure proper reporting of all testing activities to effectively communicate test results and discoveries

  • Engage in efforts to transfer technology between GM Motorsports and GM Production programs

  • Keep Director/Manager informed of assignment status, timing, and technical issues

  • Lead efforts to mentor and grow less experienced engineers on your team

  • Conduct periodic performance reviews of your team including mid-year and annual reviews that coincide with GM's corporate policies

  • Coordinate and approve all travel plans for members of your team

Additional Job Description

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject

  • 15+ years of engineering experience in motorsports competition

  • Demonstrates as a strong team player who excels at working collaboratively and cross-functionally with other team members

  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to effectively guide a team

  • Experience leading a team with project management, resource coordination, problem solving and reporting

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, bringing a strong work ethic and integrity

  • Ability to work and make decisions independently

  • An authority for motorsports vehicle testing in competition environments

  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR race vehicles

  • Knowledge of NASCAR race series regulations

  • Experience in leading NASCAR vehicle track test programs

  • Experience with vehicle data acquisition systems

  • Highly analytical, client-oriented, and structured with strong relationship and communications skills
