Director, Track Operations

MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

Nestled on more than 1,400 acres in the Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is a track rich in racing history. It has been the love of NASCAR racing and the thrill of a great time that has made it a favorite of race fans and drivers alike for more than 50 years. Michigan International Speedway has more than 12 campground and is the state of Michigan’s largest registered campground. In addition to two great weekends of racing, the speedway is home to events throughout the year including the MIS Backyard Hockey Tournament, Faster Horses Festival and Nite Lites.

The Director, Track Operations will work closely with the Track President and the Midwest Region’s VP of Operations in planning, directing and managing all track and facility operations activities at Michigan International Speedway.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Establish programs and standards that ensure the continuous upkeep of the racing surface, facilities, grounds, infrastructure and equipment to keep the property event ready at all times.
  • Create and manage the operations, facilities and maintenance teams’ budget and create an effective and cost-efficient operating plan that serves the changing needs of the business.
  • Work with the Track President to manage the track capital budget and oversee the completion of approved capital projects.
  • Hire, develop, lead and manage the track operations, facilities and maintenance teams, including full-time, part-time, seasonal and event staff.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, industry stakeholders, vendors, and community partners through a service-based approach.
  • Continuously assess operational needs and present recommendations to the Track President and other company leadership as required.
  • Serve as the primary track contact for NASCAR’s competition and track services teams, and work with the Sr. Director of Event Operations and track fire/medical leads to ensure annual compliance with NASCAR event standards.
  • Responsible for health code compliance, safety training, and environmental compliance, including OSHA and MDHHS drinking water certification.
  • Demonstrate a technical knowledge of various trades (plumbing, electrical, AV, HVAC, etc.) in order to diagnose the root of problems, determine solutions and scopes of work, assemble accurate budget forecasts and perform maintenance work.
  • Request, receive, review and negotiate bids from third-party vendors for work that cannot be performed in-house.
  • Lead and oversee various construction and improvement projects.
  • Ensure all laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, risk management, security and safety precautions, rules, regulations and emergency procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Prepare contracts with the assistance of the NASCAR legal team, including facility usage agreements, licensing agreements, service agreements and equipment rental agreements.
  • Oversee all event setup, teardown and property restoration.
  • Work with the security team to schedule property deliveries, vendor work, etc.
  • Support other events in the Midwest Region, and potentially other regions, as needed.
  • Serve as the primary onsite contact for special events and be on-call for any facility emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, from a four year college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five (5) years of managerial experience in facility operations and/or event production.
  • Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, including Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience preparing facilities for large-scale public and private events.
  • Knowledge and experience of planning, executing, managing and controlling budget(s).
  • Technical knowledge of various trades (plumbing, electrical, AV, HVAC, etc.) a plus.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management and prospects in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to collaborate with employees at all levels, across all teams throughout the organization to maximize safety, productivity and revenue for the track.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and motivate a diverse workforce.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, including first aid and all applicable safety standards for public facilities.
  • Self-motivated and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and implement immediate corrective action.
  • In addition to the normal work schedule, which varies depending on the season, must be able to work extended hours during events, weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Position may require occasional travel.

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Work performed in environments with a wide range of temperature and weather conditions (extreme heat/cold).
  • Work requires extended periods of standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Climbing (extension ladders, stairs, and ramps, in and out of ditches).
  • Repetitive bending, reaching, crouching, pushing and pulling.
  • Maintaining balance to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching on even or uneven surfaces.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or fee; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is regularly required to lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
