Project Engineer

Every F1 win is the result of incredible teamwork. Making it happen takes the same level of skill, dedication, and teamwork from the Formula 1 team. We’re looking for a Project Engineer to join our Track Systems team, driving technical projects to help achieve the organization’s goals.

The Formula 1 Track Systems department manages and develops circuit-based systems that provide core support for F1, the FIA, F1 Teams, and Support Series. Our combined elements comprise an optical communications network, car to trackside telemetry links, and a timing data acquisition platform which provide connectivity and supply data to our race operations, competitors, and a variety of other clients.

The Role

We are looking for experienced engineers with a passion for technology and innovation, to progress our projects and advance our organizational goals.

With your broad technical and ideally motorsport related experience, incorporating Electronics Systems, Telemetry, and Networks, you will assist our technical teams with projects and technical investigations, either as technical lead or technical support.

Initially you will spend time learning how our systems and services function and gain an understanding of the organization’s objectives. This may involve some travel to F1 events, however future travel would only be required if necessary for your work.

With an understanding of the objectives and technical challenges, you will provide the knowledge and support to deliver a variety of exciting projects.

To keep F1 at the forefront of technology, you will also help to evaluate potential technical solutions and present detailed proposals for consideration.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The role requires you to:

  • Oversee department projects from a Technical and PM perspective.  
  • Work with internal technical groups to research, evaluate, and recommend technical solutions.
  • Research and quickly understand new technologies that could bring value to the operation.
  • Attend technical meetings with business owners or technical specialists (internal and external) and reporting to the Head of Track Systems.
  • Be a self-driven, systems thinker. You see the big picture. You can translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and actionable reports.
  • Submit detailed proposals for consideration, comprising:
    • Clear technical and/or business benefits
    • Budget and cost analysis
    • Timelines and milestones
    • Risk analysis and mitigation.
    • Quality assurance elements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, and work with recognized project management methodologies.
  • Plan and conduct demonstrations and tests.

About You

  • Degree in Engineering or related technical discipline
  • Broad technical knowledge
  • Experience in technical Project Management.
  • Experience of working within a similar technical environment, ideally motorsport.
  • Experience with design and development of technical systems, from concept through to testing and deployment.
  • Technical report writing
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Ability to work (occasionally) on weekends during event hours, whether UK or abroad.
  • Great planning skills, including the ability to prioritise and multi-task effectively.
  • Proven problem-solving skills to address technical challenges.
  • Proven ability to analyse situations, identify root causes, and propose effective solutions.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
