Job Title: Industrial Placement – Vehicle Design (Powertrain) Department: Vehicle Design About the Department: Vehicle Design is at the heart of engineering disciplines with Williams Racing. A team of highly skilled and experienced designers work closely with all other engineering disciplines within the team such as Aerodynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, Manufacturing and Simulation to name a few, to deliver the car design in relentless pursuit of performance using leading edge manufacturing, design and materials technology. Role Overview: This role offers a rare opportunity to be involved in the world of Formula 1 from an early stage in your career. As part of Vehicle Design, you will be emersed in the team and given real problems to solve to contribute to our on-track performance. Contributing strongly to delivering new designs and parts for current and future cars, the successful candidate will be fully emersed in a design team producing detailed drawings and assemblies for manufacturing, working from concept through to prototype part design and testing, using a wide range of Metallic, Composite and Additive manufacturing materials. Your Responsibilities: Formula one is a fast paced and dynamic environment where a strong engineering, mathematical and problem-solving abilities are important. Typical responsibilities will include - • Scheming designs from concept through to detailed designs for manufacture. • Liaising with multiple engineering departments and disciplines to inform design decisions and deliver to schedule. • Carrying out calculations to back up designs and liaising with simulation and structures departments on specialist analysis. • Producing test specifications, information packages and reports for parts in factory and trackside. • Owning faults and resolving issues. • Provide data analysis of assemblies where appropriate. • Work to agreed objectives with key performance indicators. Preferred Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following: • Strong background in Mechanical Engineering or a similar degree subject. • A strong understanding of Engineering basics across Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Materials, Fluid Dynamics, Hydraulics and Mathematics. • Experience with CAD and Simulation software would be advantageous, as would the MS suite of software. • A sound knowledge of material application, metallic and composite. • A relevant interest outside educational environment, such as Rebuilding a car, Aircraft, Racing activities, team-based activities (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh etc.) • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. A strong aptitude for problems solving and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment but also autonomously are key to this role along with a strong Engineering mindset and mathematical skills. A proficiency in technical drawing and CAD design would be advantageous, strong communication skills and the ability to work to agreed time scales is imperative. A positive attitude to learn and being part of a high performing team with the ability to adapt is also a key attribute.
