GPS Technical Expert

What to Expect

As a Technical Expert specialising in training and embedding the correct application of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing / Geometrical Product Specification (GPS), you will engage with multiple stakeholders inside and outside the business to ensure a streamlined approach to the application of GPS through engineering design and component drawing release. This will have a direct and significant positive impact on the Manufacturing concepts and Quality performance of our future products through developing vehicle assembly strategies and tolerance management in the manufacturing process.

This function is crucial to integrating major vehicle systems; its outputs provide a common understanding of the GPS language and a “right first time” approach to preventing problems before they happen.

What You'll Do

As the primary authority in GPS technical expertise, your responsibility will be to ensure all authors and consumers of GPS information within the business and extended enterprise are fully conversant with the latest adopted standards. This will require the management and delivery of a structured GPS training programme for cohorts within the McLaren Automotive business and in the Supplier network. To measure success and develop capability it will therefore be key to develop methods to ensure and check all CAD data is released in accordance with the latest adopted version of BS 8888 (currently BS 8888:2020). This will be applicable for all new and legacy McLaren programmes. Other accountabilities are:

  • Definition and management of quality standards for GPS application in 2D & 3D CAD and 1D McLaren Tolerance Calculator, including ownership of training guides and methods.
  • In addition to training all relevant stakeholders, identify, train and mentor “McLaren GPS Champions” to develop a broad network of high competency.
  • Provide “at-elbow” drawing and GPS standards support to relevant stakeholders to ensure correct application, thereby setting the overall engineering assembly concept. This is required for all components, assembly jigs, fixtures, and measurement plans.
  • Ensure cost, manufacture, inspection, and maintenance concerns are addressed within the dimensions and tolerances of Engineering definitions.
  • Support root cause analysis and issue resolution for relevant drawing / component tolerance problems. Ensure previous lessons learned are raised, addressed and embedded in future process, thus developing optimal design solutions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of best practice tooling philosophies in the Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality teams .
  • Develop a plan to enable delivery of GPS best practices from the supplier base with a view to generating a revenue stream for McLaren.
  • Keep informed of changes to BS 8888 and adopt / incorporate relevant updates to McLaren standards and processes where appropriate.

What You'll Bring

  • A degree in mechanical / automotive engineering or similar (2:1 or above) and a minimum of 5 years equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • 3 Years+ experience of delivering and developing technical training.
  • Proficient in a 3D CAD system, preferably CATIA V5

3DCS Tolerance analysis software, or similar

  • Expert-level competence in GPS and its application in accordance with BS 8888:2020
  • 8D or Practical Problem Solving (PPS) ability
  • Methodical approach to work with strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter capable of using initiative
  • New product development experience in the Automotive Industry
  • The application of best practice location strategies for a range of components/assemblies, materials and manufacturing processes covering composites, polymer mouldings, pressed steel/aluminium sheet metal, castings, and laminates
  • Understanding of manufacturing jig and fixture concepts
  • Understanding of SPC, statistics and process capabilities
