Your responsibilities

Occupational Safety Health and Environmental Specialist develops, plans, implements, and maintains all the aspects of EH&S programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the achievement of EH&S goals in support of the organization’s strategic initiatives.
  • Serves as a Safety Champion, subject matter expert, and resource to the organization.
  • Drives and promotes zero incident culture throughout BILSTEIN of America.
  • Identifies and evaluates hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace, conducts and coordinates on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices.
  • Supports EH&S engagement through EH&S teams and committees needed to accomplish the established targets and objectives for the year.
  • Pursues third party recognition for programs that establish BILSTEIN’s EH&S program as world class.
  • Uses established EH&S data processes to manage data such as injuries and illnesses, environmental metrics, risk assessments, EH&S action items and other pertinent information.
  • Work with site leadership team and facilities to ensure that all key EH&S operational controls are in place, on a PM program, and that EH&S action items are resolved on a timely basis.
  • Ensure compliance to all federal, state, local laws, regulations, rules and codes including but limited to EPA, OSHA, etc.
  • Assists OSH/E Manager in generating and reviewing reports and spreadsheets required for regulatory reporting compliance to all federal, state, local laws, regulations, rules and codes including but limited to EPA, OSHA and D.O.T., etc.
  • Monitors, revises and implements ongoing updates in safety regulations, laws or reporting requirements.
  • Maintains the onsite environmental manuals and procedures and updates at the direction of EH&S Manager according to organizational standards and schedule.
  • Serves as a leader in accountability of sustaining continuous improvement with Safety while leading multiple projects.
  • Supports compliance assessments and audits.
  • Ensure all environmental recordkeeping, testing, inspection, and reporting requirements from permits and regulations are met.
  • Manage the SDS database and chemical requests.
  • Ensure GHS and waste requirements are met regarding labeling, safe handling, and storage of chemicals and waste.
  • Responsible for waste management to ensure generator status requirements are followed and monitored for changes.
  • Drive continuous improvement and environmental strategy by assisting with the ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS).
  • Develop and implement programs to reduce the company’s environmental impact, including energy efficiency, water conservation, carbon footprint, and waste reduction.
  • Assist with defining and managing multiple sustainability initiatives concurrently.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Demonstrated leadership in driving a program/system of safety or environmental in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with hazard recognition, behavioral-based safety, job hazard analysis and Process Hazards Analysis.
  • Possesses a high level of technical expertise, ability to apply skills to continuous improvement while maintaining maximum levels of safety.
  • Strong work ethic, decisive, and ambitious with an unwavering commitment to safety and security for all employees and company properties.
  • Excellent communication skills up and down the organizational structure.
  • Possesses and demonstrates strong planning, organizational and follow up skills.

  • Waste management experience and knowledge of EPA, RCRA, and DOT regulations.
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management certification.
  • Experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Microsoft Office suite and SharePoint.
  • Trained in CPR, first aid, and AED.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher degree) in science (engineering, chemistry, safety, etc.) or equivalent and equitable job experience.
