CAD Technician

Purpose of the Role

This role is focused on the design and development of bespoke heatshielding solutions using CATIA software. The successful candidate will work on creating designs for heatshield components, tools, and work instructions, primarily for high-performance applications such as those in the motorsport and OEM markets. This position will provide an opportunity to learn and master the art of heatshield design, suitable for someone at the beginning of their career or an apprentice eager to acquire new skills. In addition to primary responsibilities, the role may involve supporting other engineering projects as required, depending on project availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and modify designs for metallic encapsulated heatshield systems using CATIA.
  • Develop tooling designs and detailed work instructions for manufacturing and assembly processes to ensure consistent and high-quality production standards.
  • Support the development of prototypes, conduct testing to validate design performance, and iterate designs based on test results.
  • Work closely with the engineering team and other departments to integrate design solutions into production. Contribute to cross-functional project discussions and provide design insights.
  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation, including CAD models, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and testing protocols.
  • Ensure that all designs comply with company standards, industry regulations, and client requirements, including health and safety standards.

Qualifications and Skills

  • HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, or a related field. Alternatively, current enrolment in an apprenticeship programme in a relevant discipline.
  • Proficiency in CATIA is essential, including complex CATIA surface modelling. Experience with other CAD software (such as SolidWorks) will be beneficial.
  • Basic understanding of heat transfer principles and materials used in high-temperature environments.
  • Strong willingness to learn new skills, especially in the area of thermal management and heatshield design. Ability to absorb new information quickly and apply it practically.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate technical information and collaborate with team members.
  • High attention to detail in design, documentation, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience or interest in motorsport, automotive, or related industries.
  • Familiarity with the design and manufacturing of jigs, tools and fixtures
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping and tooling development processes.
