Role Purpose:

Working within the Aerodynamics department, the Aerothermal Engineer will drive improvements of our brake and tyre thermal management predictions using information from our state-of-the-art CFD department, Wind Tunnel, and Testing Facilities.

This is a key performance differentiator within Formula 1, and an innovative approach to our designs is fundamental in driving performance in a highly competitive space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working within the team responsible for corner thermal development. This will include all of the following:
    • Brake Duct and internal components within the wheel.
    • Brake Disc and Caliper design and validation
    • Liaising with the materials department to ensure we achieve optimal performance in all aspects
  • Working closely with the Surfacing team to achieve high surface quality.
  • Liaise closely with our CFD department to develop our model capability.
  • Working closely with the Aero Development teams to improve overall car performance.
  • Working with Vehicle Performance and Vehicle Dynamics to develop & correlate models.
  • Rig testing support and analysis of your concepts
  • End-to-end CFD Thermal Project management, including data reporting and ideas publication
  • Collaborate with the Special Projects teams and key stakeholders on developing corners for future cars

Core Skills and Experience:

Core skills that would be required for this role include:

  • Strong understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanic fundamentals
  • Strong knowledge of standard IT packages (Microsoft etc.)
  • Experience using OpenFOAM & StarCCM+ for setting up thermal simulations would be an advantage.
  • Experience of CAD surfacing (preferably with NX).
  • Experience in programming is desirable but not essential.
  • Good project management skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills. Ability to work with a wide range of groups and disciplines seamlessly.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships which support a high-pressure environment.
  • Proven analytical abilities and decision-making skills.
  • Degree in Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
