Surfacing Finishing

Description:

The surface finishing department consists of preparing items for the assembly and packaging department. The surface finish of a product is the finish that beautifies and protects the material of the product while in use. In our case the use is the end user enjoying quality Cognito product on their vehicle. Surface finish can be plating, painting, powder coating, etc. To prepare the surface it must be prepared by deburring, media blasting, cleaning, de-scaling, de-oiling, etc. In the case of Cognito, product is primarily deburred, media blasted, and powder coated.

Requirements:

Report to and take direction/instruction from Department Manager.

  • At times may be required to assist assembly and packaging department and perform other assembly or production related tasks.
  • Job duties are primarily surface preparation and finishing, although other duties may include and are not limited to:
  • Assembly, badging, riveting, fitting, pressing, collecting materials, staging, stacking, quality assurance; paperwork and computer reporting.
  • Basic computer skills: must login and out of workorders while accurately reporting in the computer system as required.
  • Ability to paint/powder coat and bake is a recognized bonus for some Tiers and a requirement for other Tiers.
  • Ability and performance determine what Tier you are in. Ability is determined by the actual skill level. Performance is the frequency that one consistently performs at in their skill level, along with the common employee requirements and expectations.
  • Perform with the following attributes to meet production goals:
  • Accuracy; assemble, process or package to department requirement with consistency and accuracy. Follow all processes in both steps and in principle, meaning “strive for the desired outcome” beyond just adhering to steps, by consciously working to mitigate mistakes.
  • Quality; thorough inspection of parts for defects, inconsistencies, accuracy, quality, and quantity prior to beginning surface preparation. For painters, thorough inspection parts to be sure they are ready to be painted. Proper baking time and temperature for each type of part. No mistakes; correct parts, correct quantities, high quality.
  • Competency: pay attention, be aware of what you’re doing and the required outcome for your work and be able to identify problems create/suggest solutions and improvements, report them to your manager in writing.
  • Efficiency/consistency; every second/minute counts, be as productive as possible without sacrificing any of the above attributes.
  • Responsibility: when appropriate, follow the Detailed Bill Of Operations (DBOO) document for the part that is being processed.
