We are seeking a Racing Project and Track Support Engineer to support propulsion system activities within GM's exciting sports car racing programs! In this role you will play a key role in developing and implementing propulsion performance solutions to assist our partner teams in their success on the track. Your creativity, initiative, and high level of independent judgment are key to your success. In addition to GM on-site development activities, this role requires extensive domestic and/or international travel to support testing and race event weekends.

What you will do:

In the Lab

  • Support the specification, setup, issue resolution, data analysis, and results reporting for dyno development tests to optimize power, fuel economy, drivability, parasitic losses, weight reduction, durability, shift performance, and control strategies
  • Calibration and software development for engine and driveline controls
  • Parts tracking and delivery coordination
  • Assist in engine and driveline inspection, assembly, installation and operation during dyno development and validation testing
  • Occasional weekday or weekend off-shift support should be expected in order to meet the needs of the program and to work around the schedule of high-demand test facilities.

Trackside

  • Establish and monitor vehicle engine and driveline controls
  • Perform system checks and troubleshoot communications and CAN issues
  • Set up and inspect pit and vehicle telemetry to confirm race event readiness
  • Review logged vehicle data to monitor and communicate issues and potential performance enhancements to appropriate race team members, including fuel usage/strategy and calibration of these improvements
  • Participate in debriefing sessions with other propulsion and race team members to confirm issues or propose advancements, and prioritize follow-up activities
  • Direct and advise on tasks needing to be performed on engine and instrumentation
  • Collaborate with vehicle engineers providing calibration of control systems such as pit-speed limiters, traction control, and shifting upgrades
  • Compile and present engine data to team managers for presentation to sanctioning bodies when requested
  • Create daily report summarizing data, results, issues, and concerns for each race car

What you will need:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree
  • 2 - 5 years working cohesively with engineers, designers, technicians, or other partners in a high performing team environment
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of engine mechanical, electrical, and control systems
  • Powertrain calibration and controls knowledge: PID tuning; Torque-based controls strategy; Gearbox shifting calibration
  • Reading and interpretation of MatLab Simulink models
  • Experience making informed decisions under high pressure and with limited time
  • Outstanding teamwork skills to effectively collaborate and communicate with varying levels of internal and external key partners
  • Exceptional work ethic and integrity

Nice to have:

  • High level knowledge of OEM or motorsports EMS (Engine Management Systems), hardware, and software (e.g. GM, Bosch, Motec, TAG McLaren, Mega Line)
  • Race engine hardware knowledge
  • Experience using high level dyno systems, hardware, and software (e.g., AVL PUMA Open, IndiCom, Concerto and ETAS INCA systems)
  • Engine combustion analysis using in cylinder pressure measurement systems
  • High level knowledge of industrial and mil spec wiring systems & hardware (e.g. Deutsch and Amphenol)

Joining the Sports Car Propulsion Team will provide you with the experience and exposure it takes to contribute to the success of our race programs by growing your engine development and calibration skills, promoting innovation, connecting lessons learned in racing to production vehicles, and ultimately, helping to shape the future of Motorsports.
