Visualisation Manager

What to Expect

Working within the McLaren Design Visualisation team to deliver Unreal Engine 5 and Autodesk VRED rendered material and Realtime datasets. This role will work cross functionally to collate and manage inputs from the design studio, Marketing team and engineering while delivering imagery for Design decision making, visual feasibility, technical validation, press releases and social media material to name but a few deliverables. The role will be measured against delivery, clarity and turnaround time of data for rendering and quality of the imagery created.

  • Enable the Design Team to “Design breath-taking products that tell the visual story of their function”.
  • Manage the team to produce digital visualisation stills and real-time assets to support the Design process.
  • Lead the visualisation team to produce digital visualisation assets to support Marketing events and customer experiences.
  • Manage and lead the digital pipeline and data exchange for all visualisation deliverables.
  • Lead the implementation of the VR/AR hardware and software for internal PD and Design studio use.
  • Manage and lead strategies to research new Design tools to add value to the Design Process and Customer experiences.

What You'll Do

  • Project Support
    • Plan and manage the Visualisation teams requirements for programmes and headcount.
    • Liaise with Head of Digital Delivery budget planning for all visualisation deliverables.
    • Instigate visualisation Quality reviews from both Technical and Creative viewpoints.
    • Manage resolution of any conflicts of inputs if escalated by visualisation team and escalate irreconcilable inputs to Head of Digital Delivery
    • Manage any offshore VIZ team resource with onsite VIZ team as one seamless delivery unit.
    • Initiate and run screen reviews for contentious, complex or ongoing visualisation issues raised by Design Studio or Engineering Attribute.
    • Prepare resource and project status overview, for weekly visualisation status Meeting. Report into Line Manager weekly updates to ensure clear delivery status and agreed targets are maintained.
    • Figure head representation for the Visualisation team by attending Design Delivery Meetings.
    • Attend Design Director Reviews as required.
    • Attend project meetings on behalf of the visualisation team as requested.
    • Attend concept engineering reviews on behalf of the Design studio as requested.
    • Attend the design stakeholder reviews for the visualisation team and manage actions for viz team members as needed.
    • Clear knowledge and understanding of the high-level surface timing plan including surface release schedule for all programmes and manage the support with visualisation content.
  • Task Control
    • Generate strong cross departmental process and strategy developments.
    • Actively explore into the Virtual/digital development of new visualisation tools and aids, supporting the Process to sell Design.
    • Produce visualisation material both static and dynamic as and when required to support Design.
    • Manage input to the High-Level resource and planning discussions at G-1 to G4.
    • Full understanding of the VR process and relationship between function group activity in design and cross departmental.
    • Manage and delegate secondary tasks to team members, such as preparation of review files.
    • Strong figurehead to provide technical advice and leadership for individual visualisation concerns both in creative and validation attributes.
    • Support VRED / UE5 designers to collate all inputs
    • Mature and pragmatic approach in resolving conflicts between task inputs, especially between Design and Engineering but utilising best visual material.
    • Keep appraised of industry trends and ensure presence at key events if appropriate.
    • Raise recruitment requests and find VRED and UE5 permanent and contract designers as required.
    • Identify training requirements and implement.
    • Allocate clear roles and expectations to the team.
    • Manage own day to day workload and those of Team to ensure all Visualisation deliverables are delivered on time.
    • Collaborate lead in Design Studio and deliver the team to excellent finished visual products.
    • Liaise with Marketing and other external attributes to understand and advise best solutions to deliver their Visualisation requirements.
    • Investigate, plan and implement new technologies to add value to the Visualisation outputs, mapping out key impact, timeline and value add to business.
    • Integrate entire Viz team into regular Agile system of task allocation.
    • Work cross functionally to develop strategic problem solving for you and the team.
    • Lead and implement the development of interactive VR environments using Scripts and other coding software.
    • Hold analyses sessions and implement data optimizations from CAS and Studio Engineering to achieve seamless data flow.
    • Develop and implement guidelines and workflows to ensure best practices across Visualisation team.
  • Team Management
    • Natural/proven people management responsibilities with a high-level technical background in Visualisation and Project Management
    • Set targets and run appraisals – Team goal setting.
    • Lead, manage, motivate, and develop the current Visualisation team in line with the McLaren Culture, ensuring that team members fully understand their accountabilities and are motivated to achieve the defined departmental targets.
    • Plan, request and allocate headcount to programmes.
    • Own the programme budgets for visualisation resource and miscellaneous expenditure.
    • Ensure adequate level of hardware and software to allow the team to fulfil their role.
    • Manage external requests through the correct McLaren processes.
    • Be a role model, live the values and communicate the design pillars to other departments.
    • Support events as a Brand Ambassador as required.
    • Create a strong working relationship bond cross functionally.

What You'll Bring

  • Successful completion of a university-level course with specialization in 3D games art
  • Extensive experience in creating videos and cinematics and show reels in UE5/VRED that lead to class leading engagement. Ideal candidate would be familiar in every aspect of the content creation pipeline with a focus on building photo-realistic materials and Blueprint scripting
  • Thorough understanding of photo-realistic lighting and rendering in UE5/VRED
  • Ability to setup VR projects with interaction and navigation controls in Unreal Engine 5 / VRED
  • Knowledge and experience of AR would be beneficial
  • Experience working with 3D software packages and modelling such as Maya, 3D Studio Max, VRED etc. would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience with data conversion - starting from basic CAD data through to completion
  • Must have working knowledge of UV mapping, modelling and texturing
  • Previous professional experience in the Computer Games industry, basic understanding of C++, C and other programming languages/scripting and a thorough understanding of game play logic
  • Excellent Graphics skills with a real attention to detail combined with well-developed conceptual thinking
  • Understanding of Configurator design and build with integration of VR/AR
  • Texture Painting Skills (photoshop, substance, Illustrator)
  • Understanding and knowledge in UI/UX design
  • Knowledge and relevant Automotive visualisation experience of 10+ years
  • Microsoft Office
  • Adobe preferred.
